Founded in 1898, Roswell Park Cancer Institute was the first institution in the world to focus exclusively on cancer research. It grew from the vision of Dr. Roswell Park, an eminent surgeon who accurately predicted that cancer would become a leading cause of death both in the United States and worldwide.

Since then, Roswell Park Cancer Institute has served as a model for cancer research institutions in many countries. Research conducted here has led to historic breakthroughs in understanding, preventing, and curing cancer.

The current President and CEO, Dr. Candace Johnson, PhD, has continued to build upon the work of Dr. Roswell Park in moving the Institute to being ranked 33rd in the 2017-18 Best Hospital for cancer by the US News & World report, including recognition as a high performer in Urology and Lung Cancer surgery.  “Cancer patients today have more options to choose from than ever before and more data to guide and inform their decisions, so it’s especially rewarding when a trusted source says we stand out from the crowd because of the quality and impact of our care,” says Roswell Park President and CEO, Candace S. Johnson, PhD.

Seals of Approval

Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) is the only upstate New York facility to hold the National Cancer Institute designation of "Comprehensive Cancer Center" and one of 48 such centers in the United States. This designation means that a cancer center's combined research, treatment and educational programs have weathered extensive peer review, met rigorous national standards, and made fundamental contributions to reducing the cancer burden.

Roswell Park has achieved accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) as a result of its demonstrated compliance with the Joint Commission's nationally recognized health care standards.
